Cyberpunk 2077 is finally out, here's how it performs on various CPUs
December 25, 2020
As soon as the game was released, it was tested on all the top-tier CPUs in the market, and this news is about one of the most loved i9-10900k processors. The game was tested on the highest quality graphics with every setting turned on. Keep in mind that the test was performed on an RTX 3090, which is ridiculously expensive, and had originally expected to deliver 60 fps on 4k resolution. Unfortunately, this is not so true. Even the mighty combo of an i9-10900k processor with the RTX 3090 graphics card failed to deliver 60 fps at 4k resolution on ultra settings. This new title might be the most demanding game ever, but it might also be very poorly optimized. This processor is one of the most prominent processors in the gaming world. What might be the reason for this processor's poor performance on the new overly demanding title Cyberpunk 2077? Maybe it's bad optimization, or maybe it's just not good enough to be paired with a 3090 to run games at 4k resolution; I have to admit this statement sounds a bit offbeat.
Minimum FPS:
With the ultra preset active but without ray tracing, it performed as expected. The gains shrank as the resolution increased and pushed it closer to a graphics bottleneck that makes CPU performance less of a factor. Thanks to the memory configurations we're using for testing. For example, we tested the Core i9-9900K at DDR4-3600 with intel XMP profile, and performance was around 14% higher than the i9-9900K running at official Intel settings. The minimum FPS we got in these tests running at 4k on ultra settings was 37.6, which might be disappointing for most people; it's the number of minimum average fps in our benchmark test. At least the fps were above 30 better than consoles, I suppose? Or maybe not.
The highest amount of fps achieved on other CPUs was not even that much. The Ryzen 3 3300X achieved a minimum of 39 FPS in the same setting and a maximum of 49 FPS. Honestly, this amount of fps with a 3090 equipped is still just bad as the GPU was supposed to provide 60 FPS at 4k with the highest settings on the latest games. Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most demanding games on the market, and it's pretty much impossible to devise one series of tests that can provide you with a definitive answer of how your CPU will perform in the game. View these tests as basic indicators of how the processors stack up when paired with the highest-end gaming GPU that you can buy, and then adjust your expectations based on the GPU you have or you plan to purchase in the future.
Highest FPS:
The highest amount of FPS achieved by the i9-10900k processor when paired with the RTX 3090 was 46.3. These average highest fps in our benchmark are an indication of how the CPU will perform in your rig. You might have a different build and plan to run the overly hyped Cyberpunk 2077 after all that patience. It's very understandable if it frustrated you to get that amount of FPS with the top tier build after 8 years of wait and all those unexpected delays. The game itself might be the actual problem as it might not be optimized yet. This seems very convincing looking at all the game's glitches and the bad performance on almost every CPU.
These tests were conducted in every situation in the game, starting from a very crowded place to a very deserted place and with all the action of guns and swords along with blood. This test covered everything you can do in the game, and they were run again and again under the same conditions, considering the temperature of both the CPU and the GPU. The question arises, does the i9-10900k live up to its reputation? We don't have a clear answer yet as there are quite a lot of factors that affect this test, for example, the game not being optimized properly or the bad performance of the GPU. The I9-10900k is undoubtedly one of the best processors for gaming, and this test was run to provide people with the benchmark of their favorite processor on the most awaited title. Be aware that performance can, and will, vary in other scenes and locations up to a 20% performance range.
Conclusion:
We're eagerly awaiting the Cyberpunk 2077 1.05 patch to see how much it impacts overall game performance. There might be a few patches or an overall game optimization that might help these CPUs and GPUs to get the most out of the game. The patch should optimize the game slightly, if not completely, so you might see higher FPS on the I9-10900k. The components used for these tests were as listed.
